Frequently Asked Questions
Who is allowed to audition?
You must be 16 to 30 years of age (18 to 30 years of age for persons who are not legal U.S. citizens or U.S. residents) on the date of your audition submission. If you are under 18 years of age your parent and/or legal guardian must also sign the release to be submitted with your video audition. You must either be a legal U.S. citizen or U.S. resident, or a citizen of another country with a valid passport who knows of no restrictions on his/her ability to legally enter the United States and qualify for appropriate work visas. You cannot currently be under a performing management contract.
Can I use a song for my audition that is not one of the 10 pre-selected songs?
Unfortunately, no. Copyright clearances were obtained for these 10 songs. Auditions that use a song that is not on the list will not be considered.
How is AT&T involved? Do I have to be an AT&T subscriber to participate?
AT&T is the exclusive partner of On The Spot, allowing this global music competition to truly push the limits of what’s possible using AT&T's unique wireless products and services. The competition will be powered by AT&T technology each step of the way.
No, you do not have to be an AT&T subscriber.
Can my audition be accompanied by music?
Auditions cannot be accompanied by any pre-recorded music, professional or not. If you play an instrument, like the guitar or piano, you are welcome to accompany your singing. Just be sure it doesn’t overpower your voice.
What should I wear in my audition?
It’s best to not wear an all-white shirt, or any clothing with a busy pattern. Show off your style and personality but be sure the outfit is not too revealing. Clothing should not have any large logos or promote any celebrity or company.
What should I write for my Personal Introduction? How long can it be?
This is the space to introduce yourself as an artist and reveal your personality and creativity. There is no right answer. Some ideas of what to write include the type(s) of music you like, what performers inspire you, how long you’ve been performing, what your goals are, and – most importantly – why users should vote for you. Do not include any personal contact information (email, phone number, IM name, home address), profanities, disparaging remarks toward others, promotion of any product, show, or corporation, or anything unrelated to the goals of this competition.
The Personal Introduction should be a maximum of 250 words.
What file formats do you support for the videos?
We support the following formats: .mp4, .flv, .mov, .asf, .avi, .wmv, .mpg, .mpeg, and .3gp.
What is the maximum length and size of an audition video?
It needs to be 3 minutes or less and under 100MB in size.
I uploaded my video, so why don't I see it on the site?
Videos will not appear on the site right away. It should usually take 24 hours or less to process and approve the video. When your video is approved, you will receive an email (If you don’t see one, check your SPAM folder) indicating approval along with a link to your video. If after 24 hours you still do not see your video, it may have not passed our screeners because the video violated our rules. Please read the rules and regulations very carefully and confirm your video is compliant with all rules, including length – it needs to be 3 minutes or less.
How do I get more votes?
Tell your friends and family about your personal On the Spot video page (the link will be sent to you when your video is approved). Post updates on Facebook and Twitter, send out emails, or upload your audition video on YouTube and share the link with your subscribers.
Do the participants with the most votes win?
No. Fans are voting to show Johnny which videos he should consider the most, and videos with the highest votes will definitely get his attention, but at the end of the day this is a talent search. Johnny will choose the 20 participants he believes to have the most talent and potential.
Will the show be filming Los Angeles?
Yes and no. For Phase 2, the Challenge Round kicking off on February 25, the 20 participants will be participating from their homes. They will be in very close contact with Johnny Wright and the On the Spot staff to complete weekly challenges and continue practicing, sending video each step of the way. Phase 3 takes place in Spring 2011. Phase 3 finalists will be flown to Los Angeles for Johnny’s ‘Boot Camp,’ an intensive workshop of rehearsals, dance choreography, vocal lessons, and media training. This is where the final band will be crafted and announced.
